Fred Vail was born and raised in Labette County. After high school, Mr. Vail went to work for the John Deere Corporation beginning as a machinist and advanced his way up to plant manager of a facility in Ohio. Among his duties for the Deere Corporation was to travel over the world insuring the quality of components for his employer. His travels would take him to Mexico, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and India.
Retiring before the age of 60, he returned home to his roots to take over the family farm. Along with his brother-in-law and nephew, he owns and operates an extensive farming and cattle operation. He ran a successful campaign for county commissioner in 2012 and was subsequently re-elected in 2016.
