The Labette County Sheriff's Office currently has 1 active K-9 Unit Team. The K-9 and his handler has had to complete extensive training to become a certified K-9 Unit. All Units are recognized by the 11th Judicial District Court and certified.
The K-9 works a regular deputy schedule with his handler and is afforded the same legal protection as the full-time deputies on the department. This means that if anyone should injure a K-9, they could and would be charged with the same crime as if they had injured a handler. During the year 2000, the department had 2 K-9 Units which seized over 547 pounds of marijuana and 1 pound of meth, with a total street value of over $547,000.00.
